Deception
Andrailis kicked at clods of dirt as she walked silently next to Garrick on the country road as she was silent he told her about his latest fight. She had more interest in the clods of dirt than her friend’s latest brawl with some kid that bumped him in the hallway. Andrailis gave simple murmurs and grunts that gave the illusion that she was paying attention it seemed enough to her to please Garrick, so she didn’t even notice when he stopped talking or walking.
“An, you weren’t listening were you?” Garrick asked as he put his hands on his hips and looked at her, cocking his head and staring at her with an annoyed smile.
Andrailis blushed as she looked up at him. “Yes, I was! You were talking about how Bobby bumped you and didn’t say sorry or anything and you got in a fight.” She argued with a smile as she put her hands on her hips to match his pose.
He smiled with satisfactory at her satisfactorily and sighed as he returned to his normal tall posture. “Ok. Do you want to come over? My mom won’t be home, Alyx will be home mowing the lawn or something, my dad should be sitting on the couch watching TV and drinking beer while scratching his butt. So we could go down to the basement and play video games.” He asked as he began to walk again looking around at the farms surrounding them.
“I am not really into the types of video games you like.” Andrailis spoke softly at the ground. “They’re too scary.”
“What are you, a wimp?” Garrick teased as he looked at her annoyed.
“No. Those sort of things just freak me out.” Andrailis commented a little offended
“Fine.” Garrick gave in more annoyed than before “We can watch a movie instead.”
“Alright, I’ll come over.”
They continued to walk until they reached Garrick’s house. It was a white two-story farmhouse with a green moss ridden roof and a weedy yard. There was a grey picket fence and cracked cement pathway leading to the front porch. There was a large willow tree to the left of the pathway and the family dog, Mydo, was to the right sleeping on his side in the late afternoon sun. There was a field out back that ended at a forest of fir trees. The family garage was an old barn to the right, set back a hundred yards or so with a gravel driveway leading to the rode.
Garrick reached around and unlatched the gate allowing Andrailis to enter his front yard, he followed, letting the gate slam closed by itself. They then went from there into his house and to the basement door that Garrick opened up that led straight down a flight of old wooden stairs. Garrick reached up and turned on a light on the ceiling before venturing down the stairs. They creaked underneath him and Andrailis as they went down the stairs. The basement came to life as Garrick flipped another light switch.
The walls and floor were concrete and cold, half windows running along the right side of the large basement. An old, orange couch was up against the stairs and a TV was sitting on concrete blocks in front of it. Along the left wall, closest to the stairs was a single bed and a bookshelf filled with VHS tapes. An assortment of junk filled the rest of the basement from floor to ceiling.
The movie Watership Down, sounded neat to Andrailis, she loved movies about animals. Garrick took the movie out of the box and inserted it into the player as Andrailis slipped off her baby blue shoes and sat on the musty couch. Garrick plopped next to her and gave her a forced smile. The movie began but she wasn’t watching it. She was watching Garrick. He didn’t even seem to notice, he just sat there watching the movie, while she sat watching his mouth. It wasn’t doing anything really. His lips were closed together casually but that didn’t matter to her.
Andrailis began to move close to Garrick, he didn’t move, just sat watching the movie. Then in one swift move she pressed her lips against his. She stayed like that for a few seconds, then pulled away. She looked at Garrick, he had a look of horror and disgust on his face. He turned toward her as she returned to her original position on the couch.
“Why did you do that?” He demanded, standing and rubbing his eyes looking quite distressed.
“I-I don’t know. I just kinda did it.” Andrailis said softly.
“I don’t like you that way. I think it’s time you go home.”
Andrailis sat there and looked up at Garrick from the couch with tears in her eyes as she nodded her head. She slowly stood up and left the basement. She was unable to keep herself together as she turned onto the main road.
She walked slowly home, tears running down her face. She was walking near bushes when she heard some rustling, but she just kept walking. Andrailis rubbed her eyes then heard footsteps, she spun around to see a tall dark figure behind her. It grabbed her around the waist with its right arm and put its left over her mouth. Andrailis kicked, bit, and fought at the figure but it was too strong, she couldn’t fight back as it drug her into the bushes.
The next day she was humiliated but she had to tell someone. She walked back to Garrick’s silently, she didn’t even tell her family what had happened. They didn’t even notice that she had came home the night before or that she had left to Garrick’s that morning.
Garrick invited her in and went back into the basement, he could tell something was wrong.
“What’s wrong?” He asked as they dropped on the couch in unison with a soft thud.
Andrailis took a deep breath and stared at the ceiling, “When I walked home last night… someone raped me.” She let out in a rush as tears began to fall down her cheeks.
Garricks body went rigged, his eyes went blank, he looked dead. “Who?” He demanded with a snare.
“Your father.” Andrailis whispered.
Garrick didn’t miss a beat, he stood up and walked up the stairs and into the kitchen. He grabbed a knife swiftly from its wooden holder and marched into his father’s bedroom. He was sleeping, on his back he didn’t even know what hit him. Garrick swiftly put the knife to his throat.
When he was done Garrick walked to the kitchen where Andrailis was waiting. He was covered in blood and crying, he came up to her and hugged her. They cried together until Andrailis pulled away, Garrick wasn’t ready. She looked him in the eyes and whipped her tears.
“It wasn’t him.”
